Graves, his daughters and Gerry the Bear pose for Hugh Morton.

With his submission of Building Bridges, long-time Grandfather Mountain supporter Kelly Graves of Charlotte was selected as the winner of our name-the-newsletter contest.

"Building Bridges was chosen because it reflects the purpose of the Bridge Club newsletter," said Catherine Morton, editor of the member bulletin.  "The newsletter exists to build a bridge between the Stewardship Foundation and our members, giving members information that helps them get the most out of their investment and insider trivia that lets them feel privileged."   READ MORE

GRANDFATHER LAUNCHES FIELD TRIP SCHOLARSHIP FUND

field trip

In his book Last Child in the Woods (2005), Richard Louv explains that direct exposure to nature is essential for the physical and emotional health of children. Now, because the Grandfather Mountain Field Trip Scholarship Fund is available to subsidize the cost of travel for Title 1 schools, more young people are getting a chance to experience close-up, personal interaction with nature and the knowledge they need to practice environmental stewardship in their own lives.

The impact of a child’s visit to Grandfather is both nuanced and individual.  For one child it may be the wonder of seeing a bald eagle perched only a dozen feet away, or the surprise of hearing a cougar growl.  For another it may be the confidence gained by stepping out on the Mile High Swinging Bridge.  Still another may forever remember the fun of climbing on a boulder the size of a house.  And the sight of Grandfather’s peaks towering above the horizon astonish all who have never seen anything taller than a skyscraper. READ MORE
